ABOUT ESKOM

Eskom utilizes resources from the natural world, including coal, nuclear energy, gasoline, diesel, water, and wind, to create more than 90% of the energy consumed by diverse consumers in South Africa and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) area.

In order for the System Operator (who will eventually be known as the Independent Transmission and System Market Operator, or ITSMO, as the Transmission business remains legally separated) to be able to balance energy supply and demand in real time, the electrical system must be kept at a frequency of 50Hz.

Eskom, one of the few vertically integrated utilities still in existence, is linked to the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) through a network of interconnected systems that help maintain grid stability. Eskom
