ABOUT THE ROLE
River Energy South Africa (RESA) is seeking a motivated, safety-focused individual for a Diesel Mechanic Internship to join the Plant Services team.
This internship offers a valuable hands-on learning opportunity in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of diesel-powered heavy mining equipment, including Articulated Dump Trucks (ADTs), haul trucks, excavators, and other plant machinery. The successful candidate will work under close supervision of qualified Diesel Mechanics and Artisans, gaining practical experience in diagnosing faults, performing routine services, and contributing to the safe and reliable operation of equipment critical to mining production. This role emphasizes learning, safety, and development towards becoming a competent Diesel Mechanic in the mining industry.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assist qualified Diesel Mechanics in the safe diagnosis, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions, brakes, and related components on heavy equipment. Support routine preventative maintenance tasks, including oil changes, filter replacements, greasing, and inspections of engines, fuel systems, and mechanical parts. Help with the removal, installation, and testing of mechanical components such as gaskets, seals, bearings, pumps, and injectors under supervision. Participate in fault finding, basic disassembly and reassembly of diesel engines and associated systems. Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and daily maintenance activities.
• Report any defects, malfunctions, or safety hazards immediately to supervisors.
• Adhere strictly to all site safety rules, lockout/tagout procedures, traffic regulations, and mechanical safety standards. Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and artisans via radio and other devices.
• Assist with other maintenance tasks as required to support production and logistics activities. Participate in on-the-job training, structured learning sessions, and practical workplace experience activities.
• Ensure full compliance with all Safety, Health, Environmental, and HR policies at all times.
QUALIFICATIONS: EXPERIENCE
• Senior Certificate (Grade 12) with strong passes in Mathematics, Physical Science, and English (essential).
• N2 Certificate (or higher) in Engineering Studies including relevant subjects such as Diesel Trade Theory, Engineering Science
• Valid driver’s licence (Code B or higher preferred).
• Medical fitness certificate (to be obtained if shortlisted).
• No prior experience required – this is an entry-level internship for individuals passionate about heavy equipment maintenance and diesel mechanics.
• Strong interest in mining, heavy machinery. or diesel engine technology.
